Simpi’s story

Visually impaired since birth, Simpi and her parents could never imagine that she could get an education. Until the age of 10, the Dumka, Jharkhand resident never went to school. Sightsavers along with its partner NGO, Chetna Vikas identified Shimpi and counselled her parents Manoj and Shila Devi to send her to school. With Sightsavers intervention under its Inclusive Education Programme, Simpi received Braille and other large print material to study. A student who enrolled in class five directly, she never gave up and was extremely persistent in her studies. She continued to receive support in studies from Sightsavers and got a telescope and a Tablet to help in learning lessons. In class X boards, Simpi scored 71 percent making not just her parents but also the entire village proud. The teenager is determined to continue on the path of literacy—a world of light.
