Mithlesh’s story

A New Vision for the Future: Mithlesh Kumar’s Journey to Independence

Mithlesh, a 23-year-old from Gaya, Bihar faced a life-altering challenge when he began losing his vision at the age of 11. Five years later, he had lost sight in both eyes. Despite seeking medical help, his vision could not be restored. This sudden shift not only disrupted his education but also deeply affected his confidence and mental well-being.

Mithlesh was educated up to the ninth grade, but with limited resources and opportunities, his future seemed uncertain. Coming from a modest background, his father, a labourer, and his mother, a housewife, struggled to support their large family of six children.

Mithlesh’s life took a positive turn when he was introduced to Sightsavers India through Mr. Bireandra Kumar. He was encouraged to join the Tanya Computer Centre, where he could gain essential skills for an independent life. Initially, his family was hesitant about the idea, but with guidance and motivation, they agreed to support his journey.

In October 2024, Mithlesh began his training in computers, mobility, and smartphone usage. Over four months, he has made remarkable progress, learning Notepad, MS Word, Excel, Hindi/English typing, and NVDA (a screen reader for visually impaired users). His intelligence and dedication have enabled him to master these skills quickly, boosting his confidence and independence.

Today, Mithlesh can navigate independently and efficiently use technology to enhance his learning and communication. His determination and resilience are truly inspiring, and his future looks promising. His journey is a testament to the impact of inclusive education and digital empowerment.

Mithlesh’s story highlights how access to the right opportunities can transform lives, giving individuals the confidence and skills to build a self-reliant future.
