Kunti’s Story

Stitching a Future with Confidence

For Kunti, tailoring became more than a skill; it became a pathway to independence.

Living in a small village in Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, Kunti spent many years facing financial hardship. Living with a disability and having limited financial resources meant that meeting even basic household needs was a constant challenge. Without a stable source of income, opportunities to become financially independent seemed out of reach.

Kunti’s journey began to change when she came in contact with Sightsavers India through the Social Inclusion Programme. She was linked to a Disabled Persons’ Organisation (DPO), where she learned about her rights, available social security schemes and opportunities to build a sustainable livelihood. Through the programme, she also received tailoring training, equipping her with the skills and confidence to pursue self-employment.

After completing the training, Kunti started a tailoring centre in her village. What began with modest resources gradually grew as more customers recognised the quality of her work. Today, her tailoring centre provides a regular monthly income enabling her to support her family and meet everyday household expenses with greater financial security.

Kunti also received a motorised tricycle through social security support, significantly improving her mobility. With easier access to her workplace, local markets and essential services, she has been able to continue her work consistently and expand her livelihood opportunities.

Today, Kunti is financially independent and leads a life of greater confidence and dignity. Her journey demonstrates how the right support, skill development and access to opportunities can empower persons with disabilities to build sustainable livelihoods and participate in their communities.
