Disha’s story

A Journey of Empowerment in Raisen

In 2023, Sightsavers India, with support from Bajaj Finserv, launched the IESI project in Raisen, sparking a transformative journey for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). The project began with comprehensive training on 21 types of disabilities, rights, entitlements, and the RPwD Act. Participants also learned about forming Self-Help Groups (SHGs), leading to the creation of the Disha SHG on January 20, 2023.

Supported by the Social Inclusion team, Disha Self-Help Group members opened individual and group bank accounts, embracing the Pancha Sutra principles. Their journey towards self-reliance took a significant step forward in January 2024, when they underwent capacity-building and livelihood training. During this time, they learned to craft artificial jewellery and began showcasing their creations at local fairs and exhibitions.

Under the leadership of President Sonam Yadav and Secretary Khilan Singh, Disha SHG flourished. Each member contributed to producing jewellery, sharing profits equitably and achieving financial independence. Their success has inspired other women in the village to pursue self-reliance.

Looking ahead, Disha SHG plans to expand their business beyond local markets by leveraging online platforms. They are also exploring government schemes and subsidies to support their growth.

Disha SHG’s journey is a testament to the power of community support, skills training, and collective effort, showcasing how determination and collaboration can lead to lasting empowerment and self-sufficiency.
