Radha’s story

A Journey of Empowerment and Resilience

Radha’s story is one of determination and courage. Despite losing her right leg to polio at the age of 3, she completed her education up to the 11th standard and raised three children on her own while her husband worked away. Her disability made daily life challenging, and she faced both societal discrimination and domestic hardships. But Radha never gave up.

In December 2022, with the support of Bajaj Finserv, Sightsavers India introduced a socio-economic empowerment initiative in her village. Radha’s training on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, of 2016, gave her the tools to educate others about their rights and access to social security schemes, earning her respect in the community.

Her active involvement in the Disabled Persons’ Organization (APNO) helped her develop leadership skills, and she was appointed Secretary of the Block Level OPD. This boosted her confidence to start her own tailoring business and open a small shop, where she now earns INR 10,000 a month. With plans to expand her business, she awaits a government loan of INR 1,00,000.

Radha’s journey, supported by Sightsavers India and Bajaj Finserv, is a powerful example of how determination and the right opportunities can transform lives. She now inspires other women with disabilities to pursue their paths to financial independence.
