Pravesh’s story

Pravesh’s Journey of Transformation

Pravesh, a 19-year-old from Katra, Mandla, faced numerous challenges due to his locomotor disability. Living with his parents and younger sister, the family struggled financially, as his father worked as a daily wage labourer in masonry. Pravesh was unaware of government schemes designed to support individuals with disabilities, leaving him feeling isolated and helpless.

When Sightsavers India’s Social Inclusion team connected with Pravesh, they identified that he lacked the necessary documentation to access these schemes. The team assisted him in obtaining a medical certificate, which led to him securing his Unique Disability ID (UDID) card. This was a turning point. With the UDID card, Pravesh was enrolled in a pension scheme, providing regular financial support, and he received a bus pass, allowing him to travel at half the fare.

This initiative, supported by Bajaj Finserv, opened up crucial opportunities for Pravesh, offering him the resources needed to lead a more independent life. In addition to these benefits, the team introduced Pravesh to Namami Divyang Sangathan, a local organisation focused on empowering individuals with disabilities. Motivated by the support, Pravesh began participating in the group and sharing his experiences to help others access the same government schemes that had transformed his life.

Pravesh’s life has improved significantly. The pension has eased his family’s financial burden, and the bus pass has given him newfound independence. His involvement with Namami Divyang has empowered him to support others in similar situations.
