Tumpa’s story

Tumpa’s Journey to Self-Reliance

Tumpa, a resilient 40-year-old woman with 70% orthopaedic disability, faced neglect from her family in Sirajbati, West Bengal. In 2021, Sightsavers India, through their Social Inclusion programme, identified Tumpa and ensured she received the social benefits provided by the government.

For the past three years, Tumpa has been an active treasurer at Shubham Anandadhara. She participated in a candle-making training organized by Sightsavers India and Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETI) Howrah, honing her skills over ten days. Her dedication paid off when she showcased her candles at the Rojgar Mela.

Now, Tumpa regularly practices candle making, earning a substantial income that supports her family. Her transformation from neglect to empowerment highlights the profound impact of inclusive programmes.
