Sanjay’s story

From Despair to Empowerment: Sanjay’s Journey with Sightsavers India

By—Nishant Singh-Livelihood Facilitator, Social Inclusion Programme, Unnao, Uttar Pradesh

31-year-old Sanjay, a resident of Gram Panchayat Soharamau in Nawabganj Block, District Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, lives with an orthopaedic disability due to post-natal polio. Sanjay’s early life was marked by limited education and dependency on his family’s modest income from farming and shopkeeping. Initially living a life filled with despair and dependence, his journey towards self-reliance began with the Social Inclusion Programme by Sightsavers India.

Under the guidance of Sightsavers India, Sanjay and his family were informed about the rights, entitlements, and empowerment that the program offers to PWDs. This support boosted Sanjay’s confidence, leading to his participation in livelihood training programs. Following the training, Sanjay actively engaged in various program activities, applying for and receiving assistive devices and a disability pension. His dedication led to his appointment as Secretary of the Nawabganj Block Level Disabled People’s Organization (Divyang Jan Utthan Seva Samiti – Nawabganj).

Sanjay’s role expanded as he organized activities in numerous Gram Panchayats, fostering awareness and support among PWDs. His leadership extended to participation in the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign, aimed at ensuring that each PWD cast their votes. For his efforts, he was felicitated by the district administration. Embracing economic self-reliance, Sanjay established a shop at his home, supplementing his income during festival seasons.

Today, Sanjay earns between Rs 7,500 to Rs 10,000 monthly, significantly improving his and his family’s financial stability. His transformation from a dependent individual to a self-reliant, energetic leader exemplifies the impact of empowerment initiatives. As an active volunteer and leader within Sightsavers India and local organizations, Sanjay continues to inspire and support his community.
