Vanitha’s Story

“I can see clearly again. I am back at work and can manage my daily life independently,” says Vanitha with a smile.

For a daily wage worker, no work means no income. For 38-year-old Vanitha from Chennai, blurred vision gradually took away her ability to earn.

For six months, she struggled to recognise people and objects clearly. Everyday tasks became difficult, and eventually, she could no longer go to work. As the days passed, Vanitha lost not only her income, but also the independence of managing her daily life on her own.

Her life began to change when she attended an eye screening at the Injambakkam Urban Community Health Centre, an initiative of Sightsavers India under its Amrita Drishti – Urban Eye Health Programme. After her condition was identified, she was referred for treatment and underwent surgery.

Today, Vanitha can see clearly again. She has returned to work, moves around independently and can once again contribute to her family’s livelihood.
