Shivani and Sakshi’s story

Transforming Young Lives Through School Eye Screening in Ahilyanagar

For many children, the world of learning can be a challenge—not because they lack curiosity or determination, but because their vision holds them back. In Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, two young students, Kumari Shivani Barkade and Kumari Sakshi Kolpe, faced this very challenge.

During a school screening camp at Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra jointly conducted by Sightsavers India, Tata Elxsi, and Tulsi Eye Hospital, two students from Ambikanagar village—Shivani and  Sakshi—were identified with refractive errors (myopia).

Prior to the screening, both Shivani and Sakshi had been struggling to see the blackboard clearly, which affected their classroom performance and made them hesitant to participate in lessons. After receiving corrective spectacles, the change was immediate. They could read and write without difficulty, their confidence in class improved, and they actively engaged in school activities.

Their parents expressed heartfelt gratitude for the timely intervention, noting how the spectacles had not only restored their children’s vision but also brought a positive change in their academic progress and self-esteem. This initiative highlights the importance of early detection and access to eye care, enabling children like Shivani and Sakshi to realise their educational potential.
