Purnami’s story

A pillar of strength and sight

In the heart of a small village in Kalahandi district, lives Purnami. She is a woman of resilience, compassion and leadership. As a ward member and the caretaker of her family of seven, Purnami has always been known for her strength and dedication to her community. But a few years ago, her world began to blur.

It started with a cataract in her right eye, for which she underwent surgery in Titilagarh. Sadly, her vision problems persisted. Before long, her left eye too was affected, leaving her anxious about her future and her ability to care for her family.

It was during this difficult time that Purnami learned about Junagarh Netra Chikitsalaya, supported by Sightsavers India and its partner, Standard Chartered Bank. Encouraged by the village ASHA worker, she travelled to the hospital, where she underwent a thorough check-up and was advised surgery.

This time, her experience was different. She received free accommodation, food and medical care. The doctors and staff offered not just treatment, but also counselling and guidance. Her surgery was a success and her vision was restored, with it, her independence and confidence.

Reflecting on her journey, Purnami shares-
“As a community leader and my family’s caretaker, I felt helpless and frustrated when both my eyes failed me. But now, with my sight restored, I feel at peace and full of purpose again.”

Inspired by her own recovery, Purnami has since referred seven fellow villagers for cataract surgery at Junagarh Netra Chikitsalaya, all of whom regained their sight. Today, she is not only a ward member but also a true ambassador of eye health in her community.

Purnami’s story is a powerful reminder of how access to quality eye care can change lives. Thanks to the support of Standard Chartered Bank, support like this is restoring sight, dignity and hope for countless individuals across rural India.
