Lakshmi’s story

A Tailor’s Craft Restored

In Hyderabad, lives Mrs. A. Laxmi, a skilled tailor with more than ten years of experience. Alongside her husband, a painter, she provides for their two daughters who are currently pursuing their education.

In recent months, her near vision began to weaken, making it difficult to carry out the fine work her profession demanded. Stitching clothes once second nature became a daily challenge, and her livelihood seemed at risk.

It was during this time that she came across a free mobile eye screening camp conducted under the Amrita Drishti Urban Eye Health Programme of Sightsavers India in partnership with Pushpagiri Vitreo Retina Institute. She decided to have her eyes tested, where the optometrist diagnosed her with near vision problems and advised spectacles.

Through the programme, she received a subsidised pair of glasses. The impact was immediate Laxmi could return to her tailoring with comfort and precision, regaining both her confidence and independence.

For her, a simple pair of spectacles meant much more than clear sight; it meant the ability to continue supporting her family and carrying forward the work she loves.
