Heena’s story

Behind the Spectacles: Heena’s Journey to Self-Assurance

During a scorching day in Rajasthan, I visited Pratapgarh district to assess Sightsavers India’s School Eye Health programme. My visit included meeting Heena, a 17-year-old athlete diagnosed with myopia through the programme and provided with free NVG 2.0 spectacles. Heena lives with her family, excels in both academics and athletics and has competed in district and state-level races. Despite initial shyness, she warmly welcomed us, proudly showing her medals and sharing her struggles with headaches and difficulty reading the blackboard.

Though provided with free spectacles through the programme, she hesitated to wear them regularly. Heena’s stress from wearing glasses led her to stop running practice. The field workers and project staff explained the importance of consistent use and regular eye checkups, but in villages, wearing glasses often carries a stigma. Girls, in particular, face teasing, being called names like “double battery” or “Chashmish.” This social pressure makes many reluctant to wear glasses, despite their benefits.

Heena initially struggled to wear glasses due to social stigma, but with our team’s counselling and support, she now wears them regularly in school, improving her vision and eliminating headaches. Though still occasionally self-conscious, she recognizes the benefits of a clear vision for her studies and athletics. Her story highlights the vital role of early eye health intervention, showing how a simple pair of glasses can greatly enhance quality of life.
