Shyam Sundar Devi's story

70-year-old Shyam Sundar Devi from Patna had been struggling to see clearly for a year. She had blurry vision in both eyes. As days passed by, Sundar Devi struggled to do her daily chores.

Sightsavers in association with its partner hospital, Sri Sai Lions Netralaya (SSLN) would organise household screenings where a health worker was assigned to perform door-to-door screening in the urban slums. Indu Bala, a health worker did the screening for Sundar Devi after which she was referred to SSLN Hospital for further screening. Sundar Devi was found to have cataract in both eyes and she was operated for it thereafter.

With the gradual improvement in her vision, Sundar Devi has rekindled her love for sewing.
