Shwetha

Shwetha is an 11-year-old girl, studying in the sixth standard of the Government School in Rajajinagar, Bangalore. Her father works as a watchman and her mother is a homemaker.  Shwetha was a happy, well-adjusted child, until one day, a minor accident at school changed everything.

In February 2011, Shwetha and a few classmates were playfully tossing a pen refill around when unfortunately, the refill struck Shwetha in the left eye, damaging her cornea severely. She was immediately rushed to a hospital and here her parents were informed that there was no way of restoring vision in her injured eye. Luckily for Shwetha, one of her teachers referred her to Sankara Eye Hospital, a Sightsavers’ supported partner. Here, Shwetha underwent two surgeries, followed by laser treatment. As a result of this, today Shwetha can see upto a distance of five feet with her left eye. With her confidence and her hopes restored, Shwetha now dreams of becoming a doctor when she grows up.
