Antarchakshu - The Eye Within

“Antarchakshu – The Eye Within”, an exclusive eye care event organized by the Xavier’s Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC), is a part of the Mumbai Eye Care Campaign of Sightsavers (supported through the Seeing is Believing programme of the Standard Chartered Bank). The two day event took off on the 14th of September and is held at the St. Xavier’s College, Main Hall. The Chief Sponsor of the event is Johnson & Johnson Ltd. While the co – sponsor is Godrej Industries Ltd.

Through simulation exercises, the participants engage in basic activities which are challenging, informative & provide insights into the daily lives of the visually impaired. In the active zone, the blindfolded participants experience the challenge of walking on uneven and obstacle ridden simulated footpath. Moving on, they experience the pain and pleasure of a penalty shootout with an accessible football. An exercise which involves a high level of self-confidence requires the participants to walk on tight rope Commando Bridge. The event this year highlights areas such as education, financial services and employment opportunities.

The theme of financial inclusion was highlighted through computerized blind-friendly cheque writing system as also a live fully accessible Union Bank of India ATM made by NCR Corporation. This was the star attraction with many users finding it extremely user friendly and packed with safety features.

“I extend my best wishes for the mega disability awareness event, ‘Antarchakshu’. I am happy that this year, our bank is contributing by exhibiting a live ATM. Participants can get hands on experience of our ATM model and this will also help in spreading awareness on banking accessibility for the visually challenged in the society”, said Mr. S. D. Sarkar, Chairman & Managing Director of the Union Bank of India.

The eye care exhibition focused on various techniques used by the visually challenged students especially while studying Mathematics and Science while focusing on the availability of printed resources as also the challenges related to faulty examination rules and guidelines. The event also showcased the diverse employment opportunities which todays visually challenged can pursue with equal efficiency as their sighted counterparts.
