Karishma’s story

Journey From Football to Eyeball

Karishma, a 24-year-old has carved an inspiring journey from an aspiring footballer to a dedicated optometrist earning a monthly salary of ₹32,000. Born into a humble family, she is the daughter of a long-serving counsellor at Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital (AJEH).

Her journey began at the age of eight, when she first visited the hospital’s football ground with her father and saw a girls’ football match. The moment sparked her dream to play, but societal norms and safety concerns initially held her back. With her mother’s support, Karishma persisted, and in 2013 she was selected for Football to Eyeball programme. From there, she combined academics, football and eye health training. After completing her 10th and 12th standards, she qualified for a Diploma in Optometry, learning under senior doctors and optometrists all while continuing to play football at district and national levels.

Karishma’s dedication soon paid off. She joined the same hospital as her father as an optometrist, supporting her family and funding her sister’s education. In 2020, she enrolled in a bachelor’s programme in Optometry, mastering slit lamp examination, OT procedures, refraction, keratometry, and A-scan. Today, her expertise and leadership have earned her the role of Chief Optometrist, leading the Vision Centre. With the support of Sightsavers India and Standard Chartered Bank, initiatives like this continue to empower women like Karishma to grow, lead, and inspire.

Football to Eyeball shaped not only her career but also her personality, helping her develop confidence, discipline, and leadership skills that continue to inspire her family and community.

From a curious girl on a football field to a respected optometrist, Karishma’s story shows how determination and guidance can change lives.
