Our work

Where do you work in India?

Sightsavers India works in 8 states, 20 cities, enabling people with disabilities and those with preventable blindness to lead lives of independence and dignity.

What is “social inclusion”?

Disabled people are often the most marginalised in society and there is a lot of social ostracism that’s largely because of stereotyping and inadequate expectation from people with disabilities Sightsavers’ projects for Social inclusion are implemented in partnership with general development NGOs and strive to build a conducive environment for disabled persons to lead lives as equal members of society. The core focus of such projects is to ensure that the disabled person is equipped with requisite skills to lead a life of independence and dignity. Sightsavers has been supporting implementation of projects of social inclusion since 1983.

Who are your target groups?

Our target group can be classified as below:

  • People living in urban/rural areas
  • Poor marginal communities living in remote areas

How does Sightsavers identify the programs and areas to work in?

We identify projects that contribute to the achievement of Sightsavers India’s strategic aims (covered above). On the basis of socio economic indicators e.g prevalence of blindness, low vision and other causes of avoidable blindness, health status, status of education etc. and need analysis studies are done. Screening of possible stakeholders is then conducted and a program to work for the avoidable blindness and social inclusion of persons with visual impairment.
