RAAB Survey: A Reality Journey

Dr Uma, January 2025

Participating in the RAAB (Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness) survey was a journey that opened my eyes to the stark realities faced by rural populations concerning healthcare access. This experience was not just about conducting a survey; it was an exploration of the struggles, resilience, and hope within the rural communities of district Alipurduar.

Engaging with the community was particularly an impactful part of my experience. I understood the barriers that many individuals face in accessing quality healthcare. The beneficiaries lived far from medical facilities and available services. The significance of early detection and treatment in preventing avoidable blindness became increasingly clear. I realised the extent to which geographical and educational disparities created obstacles to proper care. I had the opportunity to listen to their personal stories and the local struggles. This connection reinforced the importance of community-based approaches in healthcare, where awareness and accessibility can empower individuals to seek help before conditions worsen.

A standout aspect of this journey was witnessing the incredible commitment of the Sightsavers India team. Their tireless efforts in collaboration with state governments, local communities, and healthcare institutions were inspiring. They not only gathered data for the survey but also worked diligently to ensure that the necessary healthcare services were accessible. The team’s focus on regular monitoring and follow-up highlighted their genuine dedication to improving health outcomes for those often overlooked.

The experience also facilitated professional growth. Bonding with fellow participants allowed us to share experiences and exchange valuable clinical and surgical knowledge. This environment of collaboration led to a beginning of a lasting relationship among us. The accommodations, meals, travel arrangements and cultural evenings made the journey comfortable, memorable and joyful.

Participation in the RAAB survey was not merely a professional endeavour; it was a compassionate immersion into the lives of those we serve. My awareness of healthcare disparities in rural areas has deepened, and I am more committed than ever to advocate for changes that improve health outcomes and bridge the healthcare gaps I saw. I feel inspired to take part in ongoing efforts of Sightsavers India to ensure that everyone, regardless of their geographic or socioeconomic status, has access to the quality healthcare they deserve.
