Expanding Horizons: My Sightsavers India Fellowship Journey Through the Island Meeting 2024

My Journey from July 2022 to July 2024

I had the privilege of attending the Island Meeting 2024 as part of my international exposure through the Sightsavers India Fellowship Program. The 32nd Annual Scientific Congress of the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka, held in Colombo from September 12th to 15th, 2024, provided a unique opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant world of ophthalmology.

 A Platform for Learning and Networking

This conference was the perfect opportunity for me to stay updated on sub-specialities like strabismus and retina. It was an international forum featuring highly esteemed and renowned health professionals, all of whom are experts in their respective fields.

Insightful Presentations, Discussions & Use of AI

Prominent guest speakers from across the globe shared valuable insights on various topics, including the role of Artificial Intelligence in Ophthalmology and the latest advances in refractive surgery. The highlight for me was the roundtable sessions where speakers discussed topics such as glaucoma and cataract surgeries. These sessions were rich with Q&A and discussion, offering a wealth of resources. During these discussions, we reviewed video cases that explored the challenges of complicated surgeries and the strategies for preventing and managing complex situations.

Exploring New Innovations

I also spent time at the poster presentation area, which showcased ophthalmology cases from different countries. It was fascinating to see the diverse range of topics covered. Additionally, I had the chance to try out new diagnostic tools demonstrated by trade exhibitors. In the workshop area, I participated in hands-on practice using Phaco machines, which was an excellent learning experience.

A Boost to My Knowledge and Skills

Attending this scientific conference greatly boosted my clinical knowledge. It gave me the chance to clear up doubts I had regarding surgical dilemmas and learn directly from experienced surgeons. As a young ophthalmologist, this was a fantastic opportunity to grow and refine my understanding.

Gratitude for the Experience

I am deeply thankful to Sightsavers India for providing me with this opportunity to attend the conference, connect with experts, and stay informed about the recent advancements in my field. In my free time, I also took the opportunity to explore the beautiful city of Colombo, and I was captivated by its nature and breathtaking scenery.
