Sightsavers India Fellow | Participation at the 108th Oxford Ophthalmological Congress

Dr Uma, September 2025

As part of my Sightsavers India Fellowship, I had the remarkable opportunity to attend and present at the 108th Oxford Ophthalmological Congress, UK, in July 2025. This prestigious global forum united global eye care professionals to share cutting-edge advancements and address challenges in ophthalmology. It was both an intellectually stimulating and professionally enriching experience. The congress offered valuable insights into sophisticated diagnostic techniques and global approaches to managing complex cases, with a strong focus on addressing region-specific challenges using accessible resources. Presenting my work and showcasing the contributions of Sightsavers India on this esteemed platform was a true privilege.

Key sessions spanned topics like congenital corneal disorders, glaucoma advances, paediatric retinal vasculopathies, cerebral visual impairment, and groundbreaking research on corneal endothelium. I gained valuable perspectives from experts including Dr. Chandna, Prof. Mehta, Dr Raman Malhotra, Prof Mandeep Sagoo, Prof Sarah Coupland, and Dr Bertil Damato. Their presentations reinforced the critical role of multidisciplinary collaboration in safeguarding patients’ vision.

The conference showcased transformative global research and technological advances including- AI in diagnostics, 3D-printed prosthetics, and novel oral therapies for retinal conditions.

India’s strides were proudly represented, Dr. Umang Mathur highlighted the success of cataract surgeries done annually and a remarkable drop in blindness rates. Talks emphasised innovation and accessibility, with sustainable, cost-effective models shared by LVPEI and Arvind Eye Institute.

Engaging with luminaries such as Dr. Harbinder Singh Dua, Dr. Harvey, and Mrs. Parul Desai enriched the experience. I also built global connections with peers from Tunisia and the UK.

This congress was an unforgettable experience that not only broadened my professional horizons but also reaffirmed the global relevance of our work at Sightsavers India.

I am deeply thankful to Sightsavers India for this opportunity and look forward to applying these learnings to enhance patient care and drive impactful change.
